On January 19, 2015, Matovu Consulting CEO, Divinity Matovu celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in the Annual MLK Day of Service sponsored by City Year Los Angeles (CYLA) and its corporate partners. John Frame who serves as a Program Manager with CYLA and Community Service Chair for the Los Angeles cohort of Management Leadership For Tomorrow organized the event, and invited LA members of MLT’s MBA Prep Program to get involved. As a recent alum of MLT MBA Prep, Divinity was eager to participate, and decided to bring her daughter, Nyah. MLT members raised $700 and joined CYLA staff and AmeriCorps members, 1,000 Los Angeles-area volunteers, as well as City Year Co-Founder Michael Brown and Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, to transform the physical campus of the Diego Rivera Learning Complex in South Los Angeles. Participants painted over 70 different murals at the learning complex’s four different schools, inspiring students to learn and grow in a safe, vibrant educational community.
“I am thankful to John and CYLA for the opportunity to participate in the Annual MLK Day of Service. I had an opportunity to share the experience with my two year old daughter, Nyah, and show her the importance of service and giving back. The event was very well-organized and streamlined. CYLA did a great job of coordinating thousands of volunteers, and maximizing the time allotted for the day’s activities. Nyah and I had an amazing time.”

About City Year: City Year is a non-profit organization working to bridge the gap in high-poverty communities between the support that students actually need, and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide. In doing so, City Year’s 3,000 tutors act as mentors and role models, helping to increase graduation rates across the country, and change the lives of the students we serve.
